    Pinotage

Pinotage: South Africa in a glass

Pinotage is no ordinary red wine. It's a real showstopper. Created in Stellenbosch in 1925, this grape variety combines the finesse of Pinot Noir with the power of Cinsault. A glass of Pinotage tastes of warm sun on your skin, a cool breeze on your neck, and the sound of the sea in your ears.

    Character in a glass

Pinotage is – as they say in South Africa – 'born and bred' on the Western Cape. Here, it's an icon that has long since made a name for itself far beyond the country's borders and across the globe. Dark berries, spicy notes, a hint of smoke and sometimes a little chocolate create an explosion of flavour in the glass. We recommend pairing it with steaks, cheese boards and a chocolate soufflé for dessert. Or, in honour of tradition, a 'Braai' (South African barbecue).

    Not to everyone's taste

Our Master of Wine Richard Bampfield sees one thing above all in Pinotage: personality. He says: “Pinotage is polarising – and that’s exactly why it’s so memorable. It’s versatile, authentic and anything but boring”.

Recipe: Sirloin Steak with Herb & Parmesan Topping

Minimum effort, maximum flavour: this sirloin steak is always a winner! Perfect for a quick dinner after work or a cosy evening with friends. Simply sear it, top with herbs and Parmesan, and enjoy. The perfect pairing: a Shiraz. Thanks to its dark fruit and subtle spice, it has enough body to enhance the roasted flavours.
