Wine knowledge: Cork or screw cap: The question often arises in front of the wine rack: cork or screw cap? The closure influences the wine in the glass. Natural corks are the classic, traditional choice and are favourable for wines that need to mature for a long time. However, every 60th cork is a failure (cork taint), they are expensive and not infinitely available, whereas the screw cap is practical, reliable and has few faults. It is cheaper, easy to open, resealable and also suitable for storage.
The screw cap is popular in many countries because it is uncomplicated and the wine tastes good. In traditional wine countries such as France or Italy, however, the ritual of pulling the cork is often still practised, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Natural corks make sense for fine wines that need to mature for a long time. For everyday enjoyment and uncomplicated after-work drinking, the screw cap is the clear winner. In the end, only one thing counts: a good wine that tastes good - without any nasty surprises!
