An Imperial Classification
Winemaking in Bordeaux dates back to the 1st century AD. It was none other than the ancient Romans who planted their vines around what is now Saint-Ćmilion. By the Middle Ages, wines from Bordeaux had already become an international export success. The English in particular developed a taste for these French wines! In fact, we have them to thank for the term "Claret" (a synonym for a light, pale red wine). In 1855, Napoleon III had the Bordeaux Classification created, which remains the standard to this day. It organises the best chĆ¢teaux into a hierarchical system. The most coveted title: "Grand Cru ClassĆ©" ā the mark of a top-quality wine!
