Lidl Return Scheme - Recycling in Glasgow made a Lidl easier

Introducing the Win-Win recycling bin. Get a free 5p voucher for every aluminium drinks can or plastic drinking bottle you recycle.

It’s a great feeling doing things to help the planet, and an even better feeling when you get a little something back. With our Lidl Return Scheme, you can now get rewarded for your recycling the next time you pop into store. Simply pop your clean, uncrushed drinks container into one of our Win-Win Recycling Bins and receive a 5p Lidl voucher. Easy!

How it works

    Step 1 - Clean your drinks container

    Make sure your drinks container is empty, clean, uncrushed and made from PET plastic or aluminium.

    Step 2 - Insert into the Win-Win Recycling Bin

    Pop the uncrushed drinks container into a Win-Win Recycling Bin at a partcipating Lidl GB store in Glasgow.

    Step 3 - Voucher issued.

    Once scanned, you will be issued with a Lidl voucher. This is 5p for every drinks container accepted.

The Lidl Return Scheme is a voluntary return scheme for certain drinks containers sold to consumers in Scotland which are made from polyethylene terephthalate plastic (PET plastic) and aluminium.


How to use the Win-Win Recycling Bin:

• Follow the simple, easy-to-use instructions on the Win-Win Recycling Bin to scan your elible items then insert them into the machine. The machine will then calculate the value of deposit to be returned.


• You may then select if you want a Lidl voucher or to make a charity donation.


Voucher:

The amount of the voucher is the equivalent of 5 pence per eligible packaging returned correctly in the same transaction (for example, if ten eligible items are correctly returned to the Win-Win Recycling Bin in one transaction, the voucher issued would be for 50 pence).


To redeem your voucher, simply scan your printed money back voucher at the till in the Lidl store that it was issued at to get money off your shopping. Terms and conditions apply .


Charity donation:

Instead of receiving a voucher, the customer can opt to make a charity donation. The value of the charity donation will be calculated in the same way as a voucher. The amount of the charity donation is the equivalent of 5 pence per eligible packaging returned correctly in the same transaction. The recipient of the charity donation is STV Children's Appeal ( https://stvappeal.tv).

The scheme aims to increase recycling rates for polyethylene terephthalate and aluminium single use drinks containers by offering consumers a reward voucher redeemable in the issuing Lidl GB store in exchange for the return of empty trial packaging.


The Lidl Return Scheme is running for a trial period only until 11th August 2024.

What can go in a Win-Win Recycling Bin?

Material:

Single plastic drink bottles with barcodes, made wholly or mainly from polyethylene terephthalate (or PET plastic) and steel and aluminium drinks cans.


Capacity of containers:

The machine will only accept drink bottles and drink cans that are designed to contain between 100ml and 3 litres of liquid.

Drink containers that can not be returned to a Win-Win Recycling Bin at participating Lidl GB stores include:


• Dairy items, such as milk or yogurt drinks


• Tetra pack, paper-based cartons, glass or pouches


• Plastic drinks containers without a barcode


• Any items that are not listed as part of the machines barcode database


• Crushed containers

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lidl Return Scheme is running for a trial period only until 11th August 2024. Lidl reserves the right to amend, change, cancel, extend or withdraw the Lidl Return Scheme at any time.

The Lidl Return Scheme is open to all members of the public who purchase a drinks container that meets the requirements and correctly recycles the packaging at a return point at a participating store following the instructions on the Win-Win Recycling Bin.

Drinks container packaging that is eligible to be returned to a Win-Win Recycling Bin at a participating Lidl GB store must be:

• Packaging for a drink (whether sold alone or in a multipack) that is designed to come into direct contact with the drink (this does not include packaging designed to group together multiple components in a multipack); and

• Made wholly or mainly from polyethylene terephthalate (or PET plastic) or aluminium; and

• Designed to contain between 100ml and 3l of liquid; and

• Has a readable barcode on the packaging for recognition; and

• Sealed in an airtight and watertight state at the point of sale; and

• Unable to be returned to its state at the point of sale by the consumer; and

• Single use packaging.


When you return eligible drinks packaging, at the point of return the item must be empty, unsoiled, intact and in the same shape and form as originally purchased.


Drinks container packaging that is not eligible to be returned to a Win-Win Recycling Bin at a participating Lidl GB store include:

• Dairy items, such as milk or yogurt drinks

• Tetra pack, paper-based cartons, glass or pouches

• Any items that are not listed as part of the machines barcode database.

Drinks do not need to have been originally purchased from a Lidl GB store to be eligible for the Lidl Return Scheme as long as they meet the return criteria.

If a container is not recognised in the Win-Win Recycling Bin, the customer may inform a Lidl colleague, who will send the barcode details of that item for review.


Following the review, that item may be added in the future as an ‘eligible item’.

1. Check whether you have an eligible item to return (see above section of these terms and conditions).


2. Go to a participating Lidl GB store (listed in these terms and conditions).


3. Find the Win-Win Recycling Bin at the participating Lidl GB store. If you are unable to find the Win-Win Recycling Bin, please seek assistance from one of our Lidl colleagues who will be happy to help you.


4. Deposit your eligible item into the Win-Win Recycling Bin by following the instructions on screen.


5. Select your reward (i.e. voucher or charity donation).


6. If you select a voucher:

a. collect your voucher from the Win-Win Recycling Bin.

b. check the terms and conditions for what the voucher can be used for. A short version of the terms and conditions for redeeming your voucher can be found on the voucher itself and longer form terms and conditions are set out below.

c. do not forget to redeem your voucher within 7 days at the participating Lidl GB store where you made your return.

i. For example, a voucher printed from the machine in Maryhill can only be redeemed in Maryhill.

ii. If the voucher was printed on the 1st of that month, this can be used in that store by, and including, the 8th of that month.

Vouchers are valid for 7 days at the participating Lidl GB store where you made your return. For example, a voucher printed from the machine in Maryhill can only be redeemed in Maryhill. Items returned must be an eligible item. Packaging found not to be in an acceptable condition will be rejected by the Win-Win Recycling Bin or withheld by the Win-Win Recycling Bin and the customer shall not be entitled to a reward (voucher or charity donation). The returned item may not be given back to the customer in these circumstances:


Where a Win-Win Recycling Bin does not recognise any returned packaging, that packaging shall be deemed to be outside the scope of the Lidl Return Scheme and no reward (voucher or charity donation) will be issued.


There is currently no limit as to the number of items of packaging that can be returned in any single visit to a return point. However, this will be reviewed by Lidl on an ongoing basis. Lidl reserves the right to instil a return limit in any one single visit at any point.


A customer may only use a voucher once per visit.

If a Win-Win Recycling Bin is switched off, no returns will be accepted and no rewards will be issued.


Where a Win-Win Recycling Bin is powered on but failing to operate correctly, please inform a Lidl GB store employee.

Vouchers may be redeemed either by scanning the voucher using its barcode at the self-checkout points or by handing the voucher to the check out staff upon completion of your purchase, prior to making payment. Redemption of vouchers shall be subject to these terms and conditions.
