Lidl Return Scheme Terms & Conditions

What is the Lidl Return Scheme?

The Lidl Return Scheme is a voluntary return scheme for certain drinks containers (see list below) sold to consumers in Scotland which are made from polyethylene terephthalate plastic (PET plastic) and aluminium can.

The scheme is operated solely by Lidl GB and there are no links or affiliations with any other type of return and Return Scheme (including any actual or proposed national, government, or trade association led schemes). Participation in the scheme is entirely voluntary.

Why is the Lidl Recycle Scheme important?

The scheme aims to increase recycling rates for polyethylene terephthalate and aluminium single use drinks containers by offering consumers a reward voucher redeemable in the issuing Lidl GB store in exchange for the return of empty trial packaging (subject to these terms).

How long is the Lidl Return Scheme running for?

The Lidl Return Scheme is running for a trial period only until 11th August 2024. Lidl reserves the right to amend, change, cancel, extend or withdraw the Lidl Return Scheme at any time. Changes to the Lidl Return Scheme can be found at www.lidl.co.uk/returnscheme.

Who can use the Lidl Return Scheme?

The Lidl Return Scheme is open to all members of the public who purchase a drinks container that meets the requirements set out in these terms and conditions and correctly recycles the packaging at a return point at a participating store following the instructions set out in these terms and conditions.

Returns of eligible items should be made to a reverse vending machine located at one of these participating stores. Returns made through other means, such as manually, shall not be accepted.

Any returns of packaging made to any Lidl GB store that is not participating in the scheme shall not be eligible for a voucher or a charitable donation (or any other type of reward) under the Lidl Return Scheme.

What can be recycled under the Lidl Return Scheme?

Drinks container packaging that is eligible to be returned to a reverse vending machine at a participating Lidl GB store must be:

• Packaging for a drink (whether sold alone or in a multipack) that is designed to come into direct contact with the drink (this does not include packaging designed to group together multiple components in a multipack); and

• Made wholly or mainly from polyethylene terephthalate (or PET plastic) or aluminium; and

• Designed to contain between 100ml and 3l of liquid; and

• Has a readable barcode on the packaging for recognition; and

• Sealed in an airtight and watertight state at the point of sale; and

• Unable to be returned to its state at the point of sale by the consumer; and

• Single use packaging.

When you return eligible drinks packaging, at the point of return the item must be empty, unsoiled, intact and in the same shape and form as originally purchased.

Drinks do not need to have been originally purchased from a Lidl GB store to eligible for the Lidl Return Scheme as long as they meet the criteria set out in these terms and conditions.

Drinks container packaging that is not eligible to be returned to a reverse vending machine at a participating Lidl GB store include:

• Dairy items, such as milk or yogurt drinks

• Tetra pack, paper-based cartons, glass or pouches

• Any items that are not listed as part of the machines barcode database.

Lidl GB reserves the right to determine which items qualify as eligible for the Lidl Return Scheme and in the event of a dispute, Lidl GB's decision is final. If a container is not recognised in the machine, the customer may inform a Lidl colleague, who will send the barcode details of that item for review. Following the review, that item may be added in the future as an ‘eligible item’.

How can I return my eligible drinks packaging as part of the Lidl Return Scheme?

1. Check whether you have an eligible item to return (see above section of these terms and conditions).

2. Go to a participating Lidl GB store (listed in these terms and conditions).

3. Find the reverse vending machine at the participating Lidl GB store. If you are unable to find the reverse vending machine, please seek assistance from one of our Lidl colleagues who will be happy to help you.

4. Deposit your eligible item into the reverse vending machine by following the instructions on screen.

5. Select your reward (i.e. voucher or charity donation).

6. If you select a voucher:

a. collect your voucher from the reverse vending machine.

b. check the terms and conditions for what the voucher can be used for. A short version of the terms and conditions for redeeming your voucher can be found on the voucher itself and longer form terms and conditions are set out below.

c. do not forget to redeem your voucher within 7 days at the participating Lidl GB store where you made your return.

i. For example, a voucher printed from the machine in Maryhill can only be redeemed in Maryhill.

ii. If the voucher was printed on the 1st of that month, this can be used in that store by, and including, the 8th of that month.

Are there any limitations on what can be returned under the Lidl Return Scheme?

Items returned must be eligible items and must meet the acceptable condition requirements set out in these terms and conditions. Packaging found not to be in an acceptable condition will be rejected by the reverse vending machine or withheld by the reverse vending machine and the customer shall not be entitled to a reward (voucher or charity donation). The returned item may not be given back to the customer in these circumstances.

Where a reverse vending machine does not recognise any returned packaging, that packaging shall be deemed to be outside the scope of the Lidl Return Scheme and no reward (voucher or charity donation) will be issued.

There is currently no limit as to the number of items of packaging that can be returned in any single visit to a return point. However, this will be reviewed by Lidl on an ongoing basis. Lidl reserves the right to instil a return limit in any one single visit at any point.

A customer may only use a voucher once per visit.

What if the reverse vending machine is off or not working?

If a reverse vending machine is switched off, no returns will be accepted and no rewards will be issued.

Where a reverse vending machine is powered on but failing to operate correctly, please inform a Lidl GB store employee.

What are the incentives for participating in the Lidl Return Scheme?

Where eligible packaging is returned correctly in an acceptable condition to a return vending machine at a participating Lidl GB store in accordance with these terms and conditions, the customer shall (subject to the exceptions set out in these terms and conditions) be issued with a reward. The customer may select whether this reward is a voucher or a charity donation as set out below.

Voucher:

Where returns are made in compliance with these terms and conditions and no exceptions apply, the customer may choose to receive a voucher. The voucher will be redeemable at the participating Lidl store where the return was made in accordance with the voucher redemption terms and conditions set out below.

The amount of the voucher shall be the equivalent of 5 pence per eligible packaging returned correctly in accordance with these terms and conditions in the same transaction (for example, if ten eligible items are correctly returned to the reverse vending machine in one transaction, the voucher issued would be for 50 pence).

Charity Donation:

Instead of receiving a voucher, the customer can opt to make a charity donation. The value of the charity donation will be calculated in the same way as a voucher. The amount of the charity donation shall be the equivalent of 5 pence per eligible packaging returned correctly in accordance with these terms and conditions in the same transaction (for example, if ten eligible items are correctly returned to the reverse vending machine in one transaction, the charity donation would be for 50 pence).

The recipient of the charity donation shall be the Lidl Return Scheme chosen charity from time to time. The current chosen charity is STV Children's Appeal ( https://stvappeal.tv). The Lidl Return Scheme chosen charity may change from time to time. [The chosen charity at the time of donation shall be displayed on the screen of the return vending machine.]

How can I redeem my voucher?

Vouchers may be redeemed either by scanning the voucher using its bar code at the self-checkout points or by handing the voucher to the check out staff upon completion of your purchase, prior to making payment. Redemption of vouchers shall be subject to these terms and conditions.

Vouchers can be redeemed up to their face value subject to these terms and conditions. Vouchers may only be redeemed in store at the participating Lidl GB store in which the voucher was issued. Vouchers can only be redeemed against a single transaction for the purchase of Lidl GB goods. Only one voucher may be used per transaction. Attempts to redeem multiple vouchers at the same time against a single transaction will be refused and may result in the loss of all vouchers attempting to be used by that customer. Only one voucher may be used per customer. Attempts to create multiple transactions by unnecessarily separating goods will result in vouchers being refused and potentially invalidated. Vouchers may be used in conjunction with other coupons, vouchers and/or Lidl Plus, and any Qualifying Spend therein will be based on the post redemption amount.

Vouchers must be used within 7 days of the date of their issue. Unused vouchers that have expired will not be honoured and will not be replaced.

The voucher may not be redeemed against the purchase of the following items: alcohol, infant formula and Lidl GB gift cards.

Lidl GB will not replace lost, stolen or damaged vouchers. The voucher may become invalid if defaced or damaged.

Vouchers are and shall remain the property of Lidl GB.

Vouchers shall be redeemable only by the individual to which they are issued. Vouchers are strictly non-transferrable and cannot be sold or exchanged for cash. Placing a voucher for sale or auction is strictly prohibited and such behaviour will render the voucher void.

Vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. No change or refunds on vouchers will be given. If the total amount of a customer's purchases is less than the value of the voucher (after any offers or discounts have been applied), then any leftover credit will be lost and cannot be redeemed against future purchases. No new voucher will be issued.

The voucher must be used in single transaction for the purchase of goods equivalent to, or higher in price. For example, if a shopping bill is £1 and voucher total is £1.05, this voucher will not be accepted. If the voucher was £0.90, this will be accepted, and the customer has £0.10 to pay.

Refunds of products purchased with a voucher shall take into account the voucher discount and no credit will be given for the value of the voucher.

When you use a voucher you acknowledge to Lidl that you are the authorised recipient of the voucher and that you are using it in good faith.

Lidl GB employees have the right to refuse to accept a voucher at any time on reasonable grounds. Any disputes regarding the validity or otherwise of a voucher shall be referred to the manager on duty at the relevant participating Lidl store and its decision shall be final.

At the end of the trial period, when the Lidl Return Scheme comes to an end, subject to these terms and conditions, all vouchers issued prior to the end date of the Lidl Return Scheme shall be honoured up to the date of their expiry.

Fraud and Fair Use

Lidl GB reserves the right to refuse to accept a voucher where it deems the voucher to have been tampered with, duplicated or which otherwise is suspected to be affected by any fraudulent activity or any activity in breach of these terms and conditions.

If you redeem, attempt to redeem, or encourage the redemption of vouchers in a way in which you or a third party are not entitled to do, you may be committing a civil or criminal offence.

Lidl GB reserves the right to ban individuals from use of the reverse vending machines where such individual is reasonably suspected of using the reverse vending machines in breach of these terms and conditions or carrying out any suspicious activity or fraudulent behaviour when returning packaging at return points.

Lidl GB reserves the right to report any suspicious activity or fraudulent behaviour, including but not limited to consecutive or repeated returns of large amounts of packaging, to the Police for criminal investigation.
