We all know that veg is good for us, but we don’t eat enough of it. According to a study done by the Food Foundation, everyone in the UK needs to be eating at least one extra portion of veg a day to help live better, healthier lives. 

However, we recognise that in our busy day-to-day lives it can be difficult to increase the amount of veg we eat for a range of reasons.  That’s why we’re pledging to play our part to help everyone in Britain to eat an extra portion of veg a day.

STORAGE TIPS

  1. Keep them separate: As a rule, keep your fruit and veg separate in your fridge as many fruits release a gas that speeds up the ripening process and can cause surrounding produce to spoil.
  2. Keep them out: Stone fruit will ripen more quickly in your fruit bowl – help them last even longer by placing them in the fridge once they’ve ripened.
  3. Keep them dry: Potatoes and onions keep best in a cool, dark and well-ventilated cupboard,. Similarly tomatoes and cucumbers will both fare better out of the fridge if kept somewhere cool and dry.
  4. Keep them longer: Veg on the turn? Chop and parboil it, then rinse in cold water, dry and store in the freezer to use at a later date. Leftover herbs can also be finely chopped and added to ice cube trays with water or olive oil, ready to drop into recipes for a hit of flavour.
