WASTE BATTERY & ACCUMULATOR REGULATIONS
The EU legislation on waste batteries is embodied in the Batteries Directive. It intends to contribute to the protection, preservation and improvement of the quality of the environment by minimising the negative impact of batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators.
To achieve these objectives, the Directive prohibits the marketing of batteries containing some hazardous substances, defines measures to establish schemes aiming at high level of collection and recycling, and fixes targets for collection and recycling activities.
Lidl GB Ltd supports the reuse and recycling of Batteries as there are several environmental benefits of doing so, such as: Reduction of raw material and energy usage, prevention of landfill, prevention of hazardous and/or toxic materials present in Batteries contaminating the environment.
As a Producer under the Waste Battery & Accumulator Regulations, Lidl GB Ltd complies with its Producer Obligations by being registered as a Member of the Ecosurety Compliance Scheme and obtaining the Battery Producer Registration Number – BPRN07693.

Who is a battery producer?
Producers are defined in the regulations as; “any person in the UK that, irrespective of the selling techniques used, place batteries or accumulators, including those incorporated into appliances, on the UK market for the first time on a professional basis”. Under this definition, Lidl GB is a battery producer.
What is Lidl GB’s obligation as a battery producer?
Lidl GB is a producer who places more than 1 tonne of portable batteries/accumulators on the UK market in a compliance year (1 Jan - 31 Dec). We are obligated to finance our share of the collection, treatment and recycling of waste portable batteries/accumulators that are disposed of in the UK in each compliance year. This is achieved by working in partnership with an approved battery compliance scheme.
