Batch from Scratch, episode two - the Burton family
Joe and Suzanne are in Cardiff, helping the Burtons start their batching journey. Mealtimes for this blended family of six are a real struggle. They rely on expensive takeaways when there’s no time to cook, a habit that’s hitting their health and their budget. As Becky does the lion’s share of the cooking, she worries what will happen when her maternity leave ends and she has to return to work.
They need a plan to get organised, cut their food spend and add some gluten-free variety to mealtimes. It’s definitely time for some batching know-how!

Watch the episode on Monday 2 March at 8pm on Channel 4 or stream on Channel 4 after the episode has aired.
Introducing the Burton family... In this episode, Mum, Becky’s, busy schedule caring for their new baby and dad, Dan’s, long hours mean that there’s not a lot of time for meal planning; on top of this, they have two children with coeliac disease, which means the family are eating the same gluten-free meals on repeat and mum often has to prepare multiple dishes at dinnertime to keep the family happy. Can they add variety into mealtimes?

Tips that helped the Burton family to batch cook
- 1
Add sweet potatoes to your meal plan
Sweet potatoes count towards your five a day, are naturally gluten free and can be cooked in different ways.
- 2
Stick to naturally gluten-free foods
Gluten-free is more expensive, so buying naturally gluten-free foods like rice & veg helps keep cost down.
- 3
Organise the kitchen
Separate out the frequently used kitchen items and have them close to hand.
- 4
Let the food processer do the hard work!
With just a touch of the button, you can finely chop multiple bits of veg, saving you time on prep in the kitchen.
