Batch from Scratch, episode six - the Strudwick family
In the final episode, busy NHS workers, Emma and Matt, juggle shift work with bringing up two very active children. Their hectic, unpredictable work schedule and the kids’ many after-school activities make meal planning a real challenge. Because of Matt’s long hours, Emma is in charge of dinner, a task made more challenging by her spinal stenosis diagnosis, which causes her severe pain and restricts movement. On top of this, she often has to cook multiple dishes because of her daughter’s dairy allergy, so dinner is anything but straightforward! All this means that quick, but nutritionally low foods make an appearance all too often.
It’s never been more important for Joe and Suzanne to share their batching tips and tricks and come up with a solid plan that’ll keep good, nutritious food on the menu, no matter how hectic and unpredictable family life becomes.

Watch the final episode on Monday 30March at 8pm on Channel 4 or stream on Channel 4 after the episode has aired.

Tips that helped the Strudwick family to batch cook
- 1
Eat dried fruit and nuts
Snacking on dried fruits and nuts is a great way to boost your daily nutrition.
- 2
Avoid processed packet noodles
Dried egg noodles are just as tasty & healthier. Plus, they’re also more filling, which means no snacking post dinner!
- 3
Get the kids involved in the cooking
Getting the kids in the kitchen to help with dinner is a great way to get them to eat healthier & practise life skills.
- 4
Use sweet potatoes as an alternative
Unlike regular potatoes, sweet potatoes are actually part of your 5-a-day and can be used to make sweet potato fries.
