Food production is responsible for approximately 26% of global greenhouse gases emissions and we are working hard to reduce emissions across our business and supply chain. As part of this, and in partnership with our long standing supplier, Wyke Farms, we aim to deliver the most sustainable Cheddar in the market, starting with our Deluxe Cheddar products. We are pleased to share our journey with you!
Our pledge is to be the first supermarket to produce carbon neutral Cheddar cheese, delivered in a credible and responsible way through an ongoing programme with our dairy farmers and supply chain partners. By working with Wyke Farms, who already farm and produce cheese to leading sustainability standards, we will collectively measure, reduce and finally offset our carbon emissions. Our aim is to use carbon credits generated through sustainable practices within the supply chain to support any offsetting needed. We'll work with a third party partner, The Carbon Trust, to ensure our approach is robust and stands up to scientific principles. Read on to find out more about our approach:
Wyke Farms is a family-run Somerset based Cheddar business, who are pioneers in sustainable farming and business practices. They have already made great progress in this area, and use more sustainable packaging, packaging reductions and displacement of artificial fertiliser. They have been working with 150 British Red Tractor Assured farmers, the majority of which are within a 50 mile radius of their Somerset Dairy. Plus, Wyke Farms are paying a sustainability bonus to farmers to incentivise sustainable farming initiatives.
By coming together as part of our carbon neutral pledge, we are all playing an important role in bringing a more sustainable product to our customers at the best possible price. Find out more about the sustainable practices being developed as part of our pledge below:
