Protecting the environment
Environmental awareness is a crucial part of our goal of working towards A Better Tomorrow. Protecting the environment is an investment that benefits communities, not just locally but on a global scale, and is something that we consider throughout all aspects of the business. Not only is it the right thing to do for the environment, but our efficiency programmes help to reduce energy usage – a saving which we are able to pass on to our customers.
From reducing carbon emissions to promoting reusable carrier bags, our commitments to protecting the environment are outlined in more detail below.
Using energy efficiently
At Lidl, we pride ourselves in running a lean and efficient business from the number of suppliers we work with to the ease of stacking our shelves, and how we use energy is no exception.
In 2016 we started a company-wide programme aligned to ISO 50001 to closely monitor the energy we do use and help identify efficiency improvements in how we source our energy and what technologies we use, right down to the small changes our employees can make.
In January 2017 we became ISO 50001 certified, after auditing over 630 sites and training 18,000 employees. We're proud of this achievement, but this is only the beginning – our dedicated Energy Management Team is continually looking at more ways of improving our energy performance.
Our carrier bags
Since opening our doors in 1994 we have always encouraged our customers to reuse their plastic shopping bags by applying a small fee. By doing this we have saved millions of plastic bags going to landfill.
As of October 2015, all large retailers by law are now required to charge for single use carrier bags. Like other retailers, Lidl must charge a minimum of 5p for every carrier sold, which is why we have increased the cost of our 3p bags to 5p. One million pounds generated from the proceeds of these sales was donated to our selected charity partners, including Keep Britain Tidy.
