- Lidl UK expects to sell 35,000 Scottish haggis this Burns Night, which stacks up to two Ben Nevis summits!
16th January 2017, London UK – As Scots and fellow Scottish fayre enthusiasts across the UK prepare for Burns Night on 25th January, Lidl is predicting sales of haggis to hit 35,000 across the UK – the total length of which is more than two and a half times the height of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.
When placed in a line, 35,000 packets of Lidl’s 454g Donald & Sons haggis with an approximate length of 10cm per packet, equate to a whopping 3.5 kilometres, twice superseding the height of Ben Nevis which is 1.34 kilometres.
The Scottish national staple, which has recently seen a surge in popularity of nearly 300%, is available in Lidl stores nationwide from Thursday 18th January for only 99p. It’s expected to fly off the shelves as fans of the Scottish Bard look to celebrate at home and try something different for dinner!
Described by Robert Burns in his famous poem Address to a Haggis, as the 'great chieftain o the puddin' race', the traditional meal is often served with the classic sides of mashed neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes).
Paul McQuade, Head of Scottish Buying at Lidl, said “Burns Night is always hugely popular with our customers in Scotland, but we wanted to make sure that those who live in other parts of the UK can host their own Burns Night celebrations. This is a great opportunity for some of our Scottish suppliers to showcase their products to a wider audience, and we’re expecting to quadruple our volume of Scottish haggis over the coming weeks.”
To complement the festivities, Lidl has also launched two new Scottish beers. The first is a Belheather whisky beer that’s blended with Highland single malt, available for £1.29. Also on offer is a Caledonia citrus double hopped lager with a slight fruity flavour and clear bitterness, priced at £1.49.
Of course, tradition dictates that the evening should be kicked off by toasting (addressing) the haggis, and whisky fans can get their hands on Lidl’s Ben Bracken Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky for only £17.49 to do so. With an array of aromas including salted bananas, baked apples and a hint of smokiness, this single malt can be perfectly paired with haggis.
Other whiskies in Lidl’s Ben Bracken range, also available for Burns Night, include:
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky oozes elegance with flavours of vanilla, honey, cinnamon and creamy caramel, creating a light and refined whisky - £17.49
Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky incorporates sweeter flavours, mixing crème brûlée, glazed orange segments and honey dipped in brioche aromas - £17.49

- Lidl UK introduces hand-crafted, copper-distilled Fruity Gin Liqueurs to its Christmas spirits collection for only £11.99
31st October 2017, London UK - Lidl UK’s brand new Christmas spirits have just hit stores featuring on-trend Christmas tipples including two Hortus Gin Liqueurs and Liberté Aged Black Spiced Rum.
The two brand-new Hortus Gin Liqueurs – ‘Rhubarb and Ginger’ and ‘Scottish Raspberry’ – are hand crafted and traditionally distilled in copper stills, priced at just £11.99 each.
These new gin liqueurs join Lidl’s existing Hortus gin range, which includes the seasonal Hortus Sloe Gin, Hortus Oriental Spiced Gin and Hortus Original London Dry Gin – all available for £15.99 from Lidl stores nationwide and also perfect for festive cocktails to spice things up over the season.
Lidl’s spirits consultant and author of The Curious Bartender, Tristan Stephenson, has some tantalising ideas for how customers can explore delicious new uses for gin: “The Hortus Scottish Raspberry Gin Liqueur is wonderfully sweet, and so helps to emphasise the fruit flavours. It could be consumed on its own, over ice, or as part of a Spritz with champagne. The Rhubarb and Ginger goes brilliantly with an earthy ginger beer, replacing your usual tonic mixer.”
Paul Gibson, Buying Director for Lidl UK explained, “With the introduction of our innovative gin liqueurs, Lidl is enabling customers to explore a whole new area of gin they may not have experienced before – one that goes beyond the standard gin and tonic. These unbeatable prices for high-quality spirits is testament to Lidl continuing to deliver excellent value to our customers.”
Joining Lidl’s new trendy spirits additions is the Liberté Aged Black Spiced Rum priced at a pocket-friendly £15.99 (in stores now). The Caribbean spiced rum has deep notes of butterscotch and chocolate – changing the typical rum and coke as we know it.

- Lidl exports of Hungarian wines double since 2015 as the region gains international recognition amongst trade
27th July 2017, London UK – Lidl UK has announced its latest Wine Cellar comprising 15 new Hungarian wines as it focusses on the emerging wine region, following Lidl export volumes from Hungary doubling year on year.
Lidl Hungary sold 6,100,000 bottles of Hungarian wine in 2016 to other markets, twice the amount of 2015 and with further expected growth of 20% in 2017. This thirst for Hungarian wines is spreading through the UK as Lidl expands its latest Wine Cellar with the largest Hungarian list so far.
Hungary is gathering pace as a winemaking country that can do it all, from a dry white wine, sparkling or rose, a full-bodied red or an elegant dessert wine. Lidl is working with a mixture of the biggest producers such as Grand Tokaji, and smaller boutique wineries such as Bolyki in Eger to deliver highly competitive value to its customers.
Hungarian wine is currently available across Lidl Stores in 10 European countries, and will now be available in 670 UK stores when it goes on sale on 27th July. Last year, a little more than 29 million bottles of Hungarian wine were sold in Europe, as reported by the Budapest Business Journal this year. This means that one in every five bottles purchased last year was from Lidl.
Paul Gibson, Buying Director at Lidl UK, said “Our position is wholly unique within the market, and therefore we are able to guarantee unbeatable value for our customers. Being part of the largest retail group in Europe, and having teams of expert buyers on the ground in all major wine producing countries in Europe including Hungary, has enabled us to continue to deliver fantastic Wine Cellar collections. Our overall core wine offering continues to go from strength to strength, which is reflected in our rapid growth. In August we are adding a Hungarian Tokaji to our core range following an enormously successful trial last year, so we will be able to guarantee top quality Hungarian wines all year round."
Lidl’s latest limited edition Wine Cellar is a collection of 41 wines from Germany, Austria and France, with a specific focus (37% of entire Cellar) on Hungarian wines. These will be in stores from 27th July whilst stocks last. Prices range from only £4.99 to £7.99 for the Hungarian wines, and up to £17.99 in the wider collection.

- Lidl UK sees record rosé sales as Brits get thinking pink
19th June 2017, London UK – Lidl UK has seen a rise in sales of rosé wine, following a string of bank holidays and a growing appetite for the pink stuff:
Lidl saw a massive sales spike of 50% Year on Year from May 2016 to May 2017 for all its Rosés (European and New World combined)Lidl saw a 15% rise month on month from April 2017 to May 2017Lidl Cimarosa lines have also seen a sales increase of 25% year on yearSales uplift follows a recent brand refreshThis includes its popular Cimarosa Zinfandel Rosé from California – only £4.19!Rosés from around the world including South Africa, Australia, Italy, France, and Spain now feature in Lidl’s truly global rangeLidl’s core and current Wine Cellar ranges comprise 12 different rosés, with more this summerRosé wine prices start at as little as £3.09 for a 75cl bottle
It’s also clear that the UK public is increasingly fond of the fashionably pale pink Provençal rosé: between 2015 and 2016, Provence rosé exports to the UK increased by 21% in volume, with 3,700,000 bottles exported to the UK last year. The UK is currently Provence’s second largest market in volume for rosé wine.
And Lidl has made it even easier for you to sip in style this summer, with its smart new Cotes de Provence wine joining its core range at only £5.99 from the end of July. Made from Cinsault and Grenache, this fruity, floral yet well-structured wine is a must-have bottle for the coming months.
Recent Kantar data shows the overall rosé category is booming, with £110.5 million sales recorded over the last 12 weeks as the weather warmed up. This is reported by Kantar to be an overall 4% rise since last year.
Lidl’s wine consultant Richard Bampfield MW (Master of Wine) has shared some fast facts on rosé wine;
Did you know?
Rosé wines are made from red grapes; the grape skins are left in the white juice to dye it pinkThe alcohol content can be much lower – from 10.5% – which makes for lighter summer drinking than the heavier ABVs found in other stylesRosé likes to be drunk young, so sip up those 2014 and 2015 vintages pronto!Believe it or not, rosé wine is fantastic with curries; the juicy red-fruitiness of the wine tempers chili heat wellProvençal rosé is typically made up of three main grapes: Syrah (Shiraz), Grenache, and CinsaultA whopping 141 million bottles of rosé are produced in Provence every year. 35% of all French wine production is Provençal rosé. New World (South America, Australia, Califorinia) rosé wines are typically a little darker pink and have a little more residual sugar (making them sweeter, but not sweet)Old World (France, Italy) rosé wines are typically drier (less residual sugar) and paler in colour, giving an ‘onion-skin’ or ‘salmon’ hue
