We opened our first Lidl Foodstore in Germany in 1973.

Due to positive customer feedback and a successful formula, we quickly expanded, and by the 1980’s, “Lidl” and our low cost brands had become household names throughout Germany.

During the 1990’s we rapidly developed our store network and business model throughout Europe. We now have over 9,000 stores in over 26 European countries.

In 1994 we entered the UK market with an ambitious expansion programme. To date, through the hard work and dedication of our team, we have successfully opened over
580 stores throughout the UK.
